Sustainability - Hallis Hudson
At Hallis Hudson we are committed to minimising the environmental impact of our business and our products, as we constantly try to do better. We are continually developing and reviewing our sustainability and the effective management of our carbon reduction, energy, quality, and responsible sourcing, all of which are of key important to us.
SUStainability its a continuous journey
We are fortunate to work in a beautiful part of the country. our office, manufacturing unit and warehouse are located on the border of the Ribble Valley, so we understand the important of protecting our environment for generations to come.
Our operational focus is on improving our office and warehouse to reduce our emissions. We have just replaced the roof of our 55,000 square foot warehouse. The new structure is more energy efficient and insulated but continues to maximise natural daylight. Now the structural changes are completed to the sawtooth style roof the next phase is to add Solar Panels to the solid areas and this project is expected to be completed Spring 2025.
We use renewable energy at our sites and to help us continue on our carbon reduction journey we have also started the process of changing our field team vehicles to PHEV to minimise the impact of doing business with our customers.

We pride ourselves on developing long-term relationships with suppliers across our supply chain forming beneficial partnerships with quality, like-minded companies, to create products that help all our customers embrace a more sustainable lifestyle.
Our wood products are sourced from forestry commission, responsibly managed forests to ensure sustainable use, and the protection of global forests and habitation for animals worldwide, for future generations to come.
We are proud to have teamed up with One Tree Planted who are a non-profit organisation driven towards global reforestation. Our partnership as part of our Eden pole range development helps to plant trees across the UK which play a crucial and vital role in our changing our fragile environment. – So far we have planted just over 400 trees.
Our products take time to design, make and test. We carefully consider our raw materials to ensure we deliver a quality product, that will stand the test of time as well as being both socially and ethically sourced.

We work closely with leading brands and suppliers of our own brand goods to ensure a greater proportion of our products utilise BCI cotton and recycled polyester, or other sustainable materials and practices.
We only work with partners who can meet joint high standards and guarantee fair working conditions. Where possible we utilise materials with lower carbon footprints that can be recycled, such as steel for poles and aluminium for tracks. These are two of the most recycled materials in the world; they can be easily recycled and don’t lose strength when re-utilised and given new life.
Additionally, we use products that are a by-product of other industries. Eternity, one of our trimming ranges uses Bella Dura yarns. These are cradle to the grave trimmings that use recycled yarns as by products and they can be 100% recycled when the trims are finished with. Our feather also comes as a by-product from the food industry and is fully accredited with IDFL standard certification and RDS Certification.

We continually review our packaging and are working to identify opportunities to further improve our sustainability in this area. We reuse and recycle packaging and work to identify opportunities to reduce our waste materials.
This is an ongoing project and involves multiple suppliers so will take time as we want to get this right. It’s important to find suitable alternatives to ensure products arrive safely and undamaged on first delivery, to ensure no further impact to our carbon footprint with second replacement deliveries.
Currently all our delivery cartons are made of 70% recycled materials and our tubes are 97% use recycled materials, but we continue to develop new solutions and packaging methods with our suppliers, to reduce our impact.

independent accreditations for your peace of mind
We want our customers to have confidence and reassurance that we as a company care, so we carry out independent audits and work with like-minded suppliers, who recognise industry accreditation and audit schemes. Below are a number of organisations or standards that we currently adherred to to as an organisation or for specific ranges to ensure peace of mind and confidence in us as a company and our products.
We recently signed up and undertook a Sedex SMETA audit. SMETA are independent ethical trade audits, which help give our customers the confidence and reassurance they are working with a sustainable supplier.
It helps us gain a greater understanding of the social and environmental performance of our business and suppliers, helping us to make improvements to our performance and that of our supply chain. It also helps protect our extended family, our team ensuring we maintain high standards of labour, health and safety and ethics within our own operation.

We work with suppliers who are parf ot the Better Cotton Initiative. BCI is a not-for-profit organisation (the largest cotton sustainability programme in the world) that helps cotton growers employ more socially and economically sustainable farming methods. So, by using cotton products that are BCI we’re able to support more sustainable farming.
Better Cotton is sourced via a system of Mass Balance. What does this mean? Well, similar to the way that renewable energy works, Better Cotton is not physically traceable to individual products but what comes out must equate to what goes in. Look out for the BCI icon across our fabrics and linings.

We source qualities that use recycled materials, accredited by the Global Recycled Standard so we can be sure of their origin and claims. The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is a voluntary product standard for tracking and verifying the content of recycled materials in a final product.
The standard applies to the full supply chain and addresses traceability, environmental principles, social requirements, chemical content and labelling. We are currently developing products that are GRS certified with 50% Recycled materials.

IDFL is the largest down and feather testing laboratory in the world and provides testing services for down and feather materials and they also offers audit and inspection services. All the natural fillings we use are a by-product of the food industry and every delivery of feather we receive comes with a vet’s certificate and a certificate of origin. This states that the feather is properly sourced, thoroughly washed and ultimately, safe. Our feather is tested for cleanliness, flammability, and density to ensure a flawless product for consumers. These are all authorised by the internationally recognised, IDFL standard.
Additionally, the feather used in our cushion pads is RDS certified. Responsible Down Standard (RDS) states that the products, factories, and subcontractors have been inspected, assessed, and found to conform to the criteria of the Responsible Down Standards. This guarantees that there is no unnecessary harm such as live-plucking or force-feeding caused to the birds.
he RDS doesn’t only make sure the animal’s welfare is of a high standard, but the staff working there too.

The feather and down fillings used in our cushion pads, are Downpass certified, which ensures that the fillings are ethically obtained and come from strictly controlled and traceable supply chains. This guarantees that there is no harm caused to the birds. Farms also must abide by a list of animal welfare requirements, which are reviewed by independent auditors, to ensure conformity.
